I came across a story<\/a> this week saying “The United States has failed to take action to mitigate climate change thanks in part to the large number of religious Americans who believe the world has a set expiration date<\/em>“.<\/p>\n

Leaving aside they are wrong about the science, I suspect people who believe this are not being consistent.\u00a0 Let me give some examples.<\/p>\n

If an asteroid was heading for the earth would they say don’t divert it?\u00a0 (Diversion is the current favoured option).<\/p>\n

In the 1980’s at least once the US or USSR thought the other side were making a pre-emptive strike with nuclear missiles. Luckily it was a computer glitch and cool heads prevailed.\u00a0 But the view above suggests we should have launched missiles back.<\/p>\n

Currently there is a new strain of bird flu in China H7N9.\u00a0 We obviously shouldn’t bother about it and in actual fact make sure we and our family get infected.<\/p>\n

Taking it to a more personal level.\u00a0 You are driving along a freeway and see a truck coming towards you on the wrong side of the road.\u00a0 Given the views in this survey we should accelerate towards it.\u00a0 Of course no one reading this would do that but would avoid a collision at all costs.<\/p>\n

Jesus also avoided trouble.\u00a0 In Luke 4v29-30 he avoided death.\u00a0 In John Chapter 7v1 he avoided going to Judea for the same reason.\u00a0 The early disciples also fled persecution in Acts.\u00a0 Then there is the Lord’s prayer.<\/p>\n

“May your kingdom come.<\/em>
\nMay your will be done,<\/em>
\non earth as it is in heaven<\/em>. “<\/p>\n

Is it really God’s will for untold suffering to God’s creation and humanity to be caused by what is essentially greed?\u00a0 What about energy security?\u00a0 Doesn’t it make sense to alter our lifestyles away from fossil fuels and embrace renewables?<\/p>\n
