Own work, Public Domain, https:\/\/commons.wikimedia.org\/w\/index.php?curid=5106071\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theoillamp.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/1024px-Diesel_particulate_filter_01-300x232.jpg\" alt=\"1024px-Diesel_particulate_filter_01\" width=\"300\" height=\"232\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.theoillamp.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/1024px-Diesel_particulate_filter_01-300x232.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.theoillamp.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/1024px-Diesel_particulate_filter_01.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>I&#8217;ve read a recent bit of research on air pollution from China.\u00a0 The research looked at particulate\u00a0 (PM<sub>10<\/sub>) levels across the major cities in China and the effect on mortality.\u00a0 The findings were unsurprising in many ways but also showed some surprises.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>PM<sub>10<\/sub> levels vary widely from city to city.<\/li>\n<li>A 10\u03bcg\/m<sup><sub>3<\/sub><\/sup> change in PM<sub>10<\/sub> concentration raised the death rate by a mean of 0.44%.<\/li>\n<li>The previous 2 days PM<sub>10<\/sub> levels had a significant effect on death rates.<\/li>\n<li>The effects were greater for cardiovascular and respiratory disease deaths.<\/li>\n<li>Older people were much more vulnerable than young people to death.<\/li>\n<li>The PM<sub>10<\/sub> concentration had less effect in more polluted cities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Of course diesel engines (much in the news at the moment) are not the only cause of PM<sub>10<\/sub>s.\u00a0 So are a wide variety of other sources from coal fired power stations (common in China and other places but closing like mad), vehicle tyres, wood burning, petrol engines, industry and gas central heating.\u00a0 So local effects are likely.\u00a0 It could also depend on prevailing weather conditions.<\/p>\n<p>The fact that the previous two days particulate concentrations is not surprising either.\u00a0 Weather and the fact that the PM<sub>10<\/sub> concentrations have to have a biological effect helps to explain that one.\u00a0 You would also expect since you are looking at mortality that the cause of death will have to be acute.\u00a0 It should be remembered that scientists are coming to the conclusion that long term effects are also occurring on fertility and the brain etc.<\/p>\n<p>The last two conclusions are more surprising.\u00a0 In the West PM<sub>10<\/sub>s have been found to have acute effects on the very young as well.\u00a0 The last finding is even more surprising.\u00a0 This suggests that air pollution effect are not cumulative? \u00a0 One drawback of this useful piece of research is that other pollutants were not examined such as NOx, SOx, these also have effects on human health and maybe responsible for some of the mortality.\u00a0 There is much to think about here as policymakers worldwide grapple with this problem.<\/p>\n<p>BMJ 2017;356:j667<\/p>\n<p>Neil<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve read a recent bit of research on air pollution from China.\u00a0 The research looked at particulate\u00a0 (PM10) levels across the major cities in China and the effect on mortality.\u00a0 The findings were unsurprising in many ways but also showed &hellip; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theoillamp.co.uk\/?p=7546\">Continue reading <span class=\"meta-nav\">&rarr;<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_exactmetrics_skip_tracking":false,"_exactmetrics_sitenote_active":false,"_exactmetrics_sitenote_note":"","_exactmetrics_sitenote_category":0,"footnotes":""},"categories":[209,13],"tags":[208],"class_list":["post-7546","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-air-pollution","category-transport","tag-air-pollution"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v25.8 -
