{"id":7798,"date":"2017-11-08T23:15:21","date_gmt":"2017-11-08T22:15:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.theoillamp.co.uk\/?p=7798"},"modified":"2017-11-08T23:15:21","modified_gmt":"2017-11-08T22:15:21","slug":"new-national-forest-charter","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.theoillamp.co.uk\/?p=7798","title":{"rendered":"New national forest charter"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theoillamp.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/beech-trees.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-7757 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theoillamp.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/beech-trees-300x215.jpg\" alt=\"beech trees\" width=\"300\" height=\"215\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.theoillamp.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/beech-trees-300x215.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.theoillamp.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/beech-trees-1024x734.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>You&#8217;ve heard of the\u00a0Magna Carta probably but have you heard of the forest charter?\u00a0 The Magna Carta was forced on King John of England in 1215 and is thought of as one the foundations of democratic rights.\u00a0 A couple of years later Henry III signed another act, a forest charter.\u00a0 This guaranteed the peasants a right to use the royal forests.\u00a0 In those days tree cover was increasing, or certainly the area of the country which was royal forest was.\u00a0 By 1217 the Royal Forest cover alone was a third of England&#8217;s&#8217; land area.\u00a0 An astounding figure.\u00a0 The point was the royal forest was reserved for the King to hunt in.\u00a0 Any incursions on were punishable by extreme measures up to and including death.\u00a0 This charter guaranteed the ordinary people the use of the forests for firewood and grazing.\u00a0 It was read out in churches every week for the next 100 years,\u00a0 The irony is by doing this forest charter they probably helped to reduce the cover to the level of 10% today.<\/p>\n<p>2017 being a year of lots of significant anniversaries the Woodland trust has come up with a new forest charter. \u00a0 This one which can be seen <a href=\"http:\/\/www.woodlandtrust.org.uk\/get-involved\/tree-charter\/\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a> is all about both appreciating trees and increasing the tree cover.
