shipping emissions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" title=\"Drag analyisis of Aquarius eco ship design https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/2\/2e\/CFD_Analysis_of_Aquarius_Eco_Ship.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/2\/2e\/CFD_Analysis_of_Aquarius_Eco_Ship.jpg\" alt=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/2\/2e\/CFD_Analysis_of_Aquarius_Eco_Ship.jpg\" width=\"649\" height=\"335\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Shipping emissions account for about 2% of global carbon.\u00a0 This is the same as flying.\u00a0 Most ships now are powered by vast diesel engines and the particulate emissions are high, which is a problem in ports.\u00a0 Under the Paris climate agreement shipping emissions were left to the International maritime organisation.\u00a0 They have just made a pledge to cut shipping emissions by 50% by 2050.\u00a0 This is a large but a relatively lax pledge compared to other sectors.\u00a0 The question is how?\u00a0 There are number of surprising low tech or easy ways to cut down.\u00a0 Looking at low hanging fruit for existing ships first of all.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Steaming more slowly.\u00a0 Maersk found you cut emissions by cutting speed by 30%.\u00a0 This is not totally surprising when you consider driving speeds.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Fitting ships with a bulbous bit of metal below the water line.\u00a0 2-7%.\u00a0 Who would have thought of it?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Even more weird.\u00a0 Pump a blanket of air bubbles around the ship.\u00a0 3%.\u00a0 Works by reducing drag (friction).\u00a0 Makes some sense when you think about it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Following on this friction idea.\u00a0 Paint the ship with low friction paint.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Rotate the propellers in opposite directions (both going forwards).\u00a0 This cuts a surprising 8-15% by cutting slipstream effects.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Lastly it occurs to me what goes on on the deck itself could also help.\u00a0 Wind resistance will surely add to fuel consumption.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>So all this looks like a 50%ish cut in shipping emissions.\u00a0 One could be very cynical and say this is no coincidence.<\/p>\n<p>More significant cuts depend on complete ship redesign.\u00a0 Again there are number of ideas around.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Build slimmer ships.\u00a0 This apparently cuts up to 25% at speeds and about half at low speeds.\u00a0 Presumably this cuts drag (see above).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Switch to LNG.\u00a0\u00a0 A partial solution.\u00a0 Use biofuels? not really sustainable.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0Go back to sail.\u00a0 We are not talking about sailors singing shanties and pulling on ropes here (only if things get really bad).\u00a0 These are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ecomarinepower.com\/en\/aquarius-eco-ship\" target=\"_blank\">high tech ships<\/a> possibly combining sails with solar panels.\u00a0 A 70% cut.\u00a0 Would still need some kind of backup power.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>There is no doubt that cutting\u00a0shipping emissions is easier than cutting aircraft emissions.\u00a0 However to get the really deep cuts new ships are needed which the agreement does not force until 2030.\u00a0 In 2008 there was a lot of thought about this but the drop in oil prices put it on a back burner.\u00a0 Its difficult as things stand to see international trade at the same levels with out oil.<\/p>\n<p>Neil<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Shipping emissions account for about 2% of global carbon.\u00a0 This is the same as flying.\u00a0 Most ships now are powered by vast diesel engines and the particulate emissions are high, which is a problem in ports.\u00a0 Under the Paris climate &hellip;
