{"id":8078,"date":"2018-05-24T15:19:15","date_gmt":"2018-05-24T14:19:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.theoillamp.co.uk\/?p=8078"},"modified":"2018-05-24T15:19:15","modified_gmt":"2018-05-24T14:19:15","slug":"tail-two-energy-storage-systems","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.theoillamp.co.uk\/?p=8078","title":{"rendered":"A tail of two energy storage systems"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theoillamp.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/1024px-Flat_Holm_PV_solar_array_near_Farmhouse.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-5690\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theoillamp.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/1024px-Flat_Holm_PV_solar_array_near_Farmhouse-300x223.jpg\" alt=\"1024px-Flat_Holm_PV_solar_array_near_Farmhouse\" width=\"300\" height=\"223\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.theoillamp.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/1024px-Flat_Holm_PV_solar_array_near_Farmhouse-300x223.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.theoillamp.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/1024px-Flat_Holm_PV_solar_array_near_Farmhouse.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>A tail of two energy storage systems at different scales.\u00a0 This week a 22MWp battery system has been switched on at Wales&#8217;s largest onshore wind farm.\u00a0 Second at the small scale Nissan is launching its home battery and PV system business.<\/p>\n<p>When National grid launched its bidding process for 200MWp of enhanced frequency response energy storage systems there was an overwhelming response with 1.5GWp of bids.\u00a0 This new system is part of that bidding process.\u00a0 It can deliver its full output for \u00bd an hour which doesn&#8217;t seem very much to me compared with a pumped storage scheme.\u00a0 Nevertheless its a start and replicated over a very large scale would make a huge contribution to ironing variable renewable output.<\/p>\n<p>At the other end of the scale is the personal battery storage system.\u00a0 Arguably this has the bigger long term implications.\u00a0 Nissan clearly see a synergy between their car batteries, cars and energy storage.\u00a0 Possibly using second hand batteries from their cars (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nissan.co.uk\/experience-nissan\/electric-vehicle-leadership\/xstorage-by-nissan.html?&amp;cid=psmyYgUz9Ao_dc|U&amp;cid=psmMEVZWzCT_dc|&amp;msclkid=263e32b3eabd1cb98fe269b1666677c0\" target=\"_blank\">the site<\/a> is non-specific in this regard).\u00a0 Its difficult to say how many of these systems there are already in the UK but estimates say about 10,000 already.\u00a0 This summer peak demand is expected to hit a record low.
