car free days"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theoillamp.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/1024px-CAR_FREE_HIGHWAY_ON_SUNDAY_FILLED_WITH_BIKERS_IN_TOKYO.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-8118 size-medium\" title=\"By \u00d8yvind Holmstad [CC BY-SA 4.0 (https:\/\/creativecommons.org\/licenses\/by-sa\/4.0)], from Wikimedia Commons\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theoillamp.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/1024px-CAR_FREE_HIGHWAY_ON_SUNDAY_FILLED_WITH_BIKERS_IN_TOKYO-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"1024px-CAR_FREE_HIGHWAY_ON_SUNDAY_FILLED_WITH_BIKERS_IN_TOKYO\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.theoillamp.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/1024px-CAR_FREE_HIGHWAY_ON_SUNDAY_FILLED_WITH_BIKERS_IN_TOKYO-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.theoillamp.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/1024px-CAR_FREE_HIGHWAY_ON_SUNDAY_FILLED_WITH_BIKERS_IN_TOKYO.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Car free days are getting more and more popular all over the world.\u00a0\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2015\/oct\/03\/pariss-first-attempt-at-car-free-day-brings-big-drop-in-air-and-noise-pollution\" target=\"_blank\">Paris<\/a> even held one in 2016.\u00a0 Edinburgh held one yesterday.\u00a0 I was at work having got there on my normal car method of cycling so took no part in it.\u00a0 As in other car free days the city centre was closed to cars.\u00a0 There were stalls, events and some kind of march involving children.\u00a0 The event was part of the cities <a href=\"http:\/\/r.search.yahoo.com\/_ylt=AwrIRhvNvSxb3FQA3253Bwx.;_ylu=X3oDMTEydWRiNmEwBGNvbG8DaXIyBHBvcwMyBHZ0aWQDQjYwMjVfMQRzZWMDc3I-\/RV=2\/RE=1529687630\/RO=10\/RU=http%3a%2f%2fwww.edinburgh.gov.uk%2fdownload%2fmeetings%2fid%2f54987%2fitem_75_-_central_edinburgh_transformation_%25E2%2580%2593_scoping_report\/RK=2\/RS=kTLs7eDoFYqBNIi0Q4jm2kOn2l4-\" target=\"_blank\">transformation<\/a> plan.<\/p>\n<p>The aim of yesterday was to make a point about air quality and the quality of life.\u00a0 These are both affected by cars and road traffic in city centres.\u00a0 The problem is that cars are the main source of NOX and particulates.\u00a0 Whilst electric cars are part of the solution, solving the NOX aspect they create only a 50% reduction in particulates.\u00a0\u00a0 This is due 50% coming from tyres, dust on the road and brakes etc.<\/p>\n<p>But the quality of life is so much better if people cycle, walk and use public transport.\u00a0 There are indications that levels of cycling have stopped increasing.\u00a0 Whether the council really has the political courage to do something radical in the city centre to reduce road traffic is open to question as is what is the best way to go about it?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Neil<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Car free days are getting more and more popular all over the world.\u00a0\u00a0 Paris even held one in 2016.\u00a0 Edinburgh held one yesterday.\u00a0 I was at work having got there on my normal car method of cycling so took no &hellip;
