{"id":8196,"date":"2018-08-17T10:15:32","date_gmt":"2018-08-17T09:15:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.theoillamp.co.uk\/?p=8196"},"modified":"2018-08-17T21:28:40","modified_gmt":"2018-08-17T20:28:40","slug":"one-thing-learnt-week-healthy-diet-sustainable","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.theoillamp.co.uk\/?p=8196","title":{"rendered":"One thing we have learnt this week &#8211; is a healthy diet sustainable?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theoillamp.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/last-subsistance-lunch.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-4559\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theoillamp.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/last-subsistance-lunch-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"last subsistance lunch\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.theoillamp.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/last-subsistance-lunch-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.theoillamp.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/last-subsistance-lunch.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Is a healthy diet sustainable?\u00a0 Listening to the radio this morning there is a new diet and health study out that suggests diets (such as the Aitkins) that substitute protein and fat for carbohydrates may not be good for you. \u00a0 There is no doubt that excessive sugar consumption is not good for you.\u00a0 Whilst the lipid hypothesis for the causes of coronary heart disease is being questioned by many substitution of carbs by meat protein will certainly have detrimental effects even by if by just skewing your metabolic balance.<\/p>\n<p>There is of course a general sustainability question regarding meat.\u00a0 It produces a lot of carbon emissions as I have blogged on before.\u00a0 In addition in the future we will struggle to produce enough meat globally to allow everyone to eat a &#8220;Western diet&#8221;.\u00a0 The solution is as the report alluded to above is to eat pulses, nuts, fruit and vegetables.\u00a0 Along with oils such as olive oils.\u00a0 This allows a reasonable intake of protein (lentils are closest in level to meat) whilst definitely not having associations with heart disease.\u00a0 You do however need a source of B vitamins (especially B12).\u00a0 There is one final thing to add a widely varied diet with a varied intake of fruits, vegetables and some meat has a very positive effect on your microbiome (bowel health) which is recognised now to have a whole series of effects on your general health.<\/p>\n<p>Is a healthy diet sustainable though?\u00a0 Eating a healthy diet requires eating a varied food intake from around the world.\u00a0 Diets such as the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.crailfoodfest.co.uk\/the-fife-diet\/\" target=\"_blank\">Fife diet<\/a> rely on the opposite.\u00a0 This is still something I&#8217;m exploring.<\/p>\n<p>Neil<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Is a healthy diet sustainable?\u00a0 Listening to the radio this morning there is a new diet and health study out that suggests diets (such as the Aitkins) that substitute protein and fat for carbohydrates may not be good for you. &hellip; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theoillamp.co.uk\/?p=8196\">Continue reading <span class=\"meta-nav\">&rarr;<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_exactmetrics_skip_tracking":false,"_exactmetrics_sitenote_active":false,"_exactmetrics_sitenote_note":"","_exactmetrics_sitenote_category":0,"footnotes":""},"categories":[9,17,1],"tags":[104,53],"class_list":["post-8196","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-food","category-one-thing-we-have-learnt-this-week","category-uncategorized","tag-food","tag-food-security"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v25.8 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/wordpress\/plugins\/seo\/ -->\n<title>One thing we have learnt this week - is a healthy diet sustainable?
