{"id":8381,"date":"2019-02-01T13:54:27","date_gmt":"2019-02-01T12:54:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.theoillamp.co.uk\/?p=8381"},"modified":"2019-02-01T13:54:27","modified_gmt":"2019-02-01T12:54:27","slug":"one-thing-learnt-week-electricity-air","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.theoillamp.co.uk\/?p=8381","title":{"rendered":"One thing we have learnt this week &#8211; electricity from the air"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theoillamp.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/10668295_1133346013348006_545104614_n.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-6339\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theoillamp.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/10668295_1133346013348006_545104614_n-300x240.jpg\" alt=\"10668295_1133346013348006_545104614_n\" width=\"300\" height=\"240\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.theoillamp.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/10668295_1133346013348006_545104614_n-300x240.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.theoillamp.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/10668295_1133346013348006_545104614_n.jpg 960w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Electricity from the air sounds too good to be true.\u00a0 But researchers have announced this week they have found a way of harvesting electricity from the thin air.\u00a0 Of course its not coming literally from the air but rather from the electromagnetic radiation passing through it.<\/p>\n<p>This while not exactly a waste material is certainly partly going to waste.\u00a0 We are talking about radio waves mainly.\u00a0 Signals from Wifi and other radio signals.\u00a0 What researchers have done is come up with new materials that can harvest the signals and convert it to a small amount of power.\u00a0 There is nothing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/technology-34401616\" target=\"_blank\">new<\/a> in this and your radio or Wifi works on the same principle using Farady&#8217;s theories of electromagnetism .\u00a0 The radio signal is converted to small amounts of electricity which an amplifier uses to convert to sound (in the case of a domestic radio).\u00a0 Some mobile phones can be charged without plugging them in (although by a bespoke electromagnetic beam) and there is talk of charging electric cars in the same way.\u00a0 What&#8217;s new is the material can harvest the power and are flexible. One sort of harvester is a sort of table\u00a0 cloth.<\/p>\n<p>Whilst electricity from the air looks interesting it suffers from a couple of drawbacks.\u00a0 The amounts of power are very low and come from conventional electricity sources before they hit the air.\u00a0 It not a free lunch.\u00a0 Presumably the amounts of power you are removing do not interfere with signal quality.\u00a0 It raises some issues you could harvest your neighbours Wifi power in fact in most cases there would be little way of telling where it has come from.\u00a0 But if you think about your Wifi radiates in every direction and most of the time most of its going to waste.<\/p>\n<p>Neil<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Electricity from the air sounds too good to be true.\u00a0 But researchers have announced this week they have found a way of harvesting electricity from the thin air.\u00a0 Of course its not coming literally from the air but rather from &hellip;
