{"id":8405,"date":"2019-02-28T17:02:17","date_gmt":"2019-02-28T16:02:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.theoillamp.co.uk\/?p=8405"},"modified":"2019-02-28T17:02:17","modified_gmt":"2019-02-28T16:02:17","slug":"bike-theft","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.theoillamp.co.uk\/?p=8405","title":{"rendered":"Bike theft"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Bike theft mostly affects the poorest in UK society (or at least in England and Wales).\u00a0 This is the outcome of the latest survey on cycle theft.\u00a0 Most people who have their bikes stolen have an income of less than \u00a310,000\/year.\u00a0 This is of itself a surprise until you work out that a lot of these will be students or children.\u00a0 My experience of cycling is that its a middle class pursuit.\u00a0 The biggest hotspots for bike theft are the big cities and university town.\u00a0 This is hardly a surprise.\u00a0 Its always been said that bikes are stolen almost to order in Cambridge and sold in Oxford or visa versa.<\/p>\n<p>Here are what the survey says.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Most thefts take place during the week.\u00a0 Again not a surprise, the bike is either out in use or is more vulnerable since its owner is out.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Most thefts take place in flats.\u00a0 Again this is not a surprise since there is no where to leave it except the stairwell in most cases and taking the bike into your flat when its wet or fills the place up is unacceptable to most users.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>40% of thefts took place when the bike was locked up.\u00a0 This figure this misleading though since it excludes bikes locked in sheds.\u00a0 The figures also do not include cycles stolen as part of a break in.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Higher bike theft took place amongst students and in lower income areas.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Under 35&#8217;s were more likely to be victims than those over 35.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>What&#8217;s interesting is the trend by whatever measure is downwards (graph below).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theoillamp.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/ons-bike-theft-data.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-8408\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theoillamp.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/ons-bike-theft-data-300x251.jpg\" alt=\"ons bike theft data\" width=\"300\" height=\"251\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.theoillamp.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/ons-bike-theft-data-300x251.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.theoillamp.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/ons-bike-theft-data.jpg 477w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>I&#8217;m very lucky not to have had any bikes I&#8217;ve owned stolen ever.\u00a0 My daughter has had bits nicked off hers.\u00a0 I often leave my bike outside shops for very short periods unlocked, when I go to get something.\u00a0 I got away with it so far.\u00a0 My advice is leave it somewhere public, have a good lock, take it into your flat and not have quick release wheels.<\/p>\n<p>Neil<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Bike theft mostly affects the poorest in UK society (or at least in England and Wales).\u00a0 This is the outcome of the latest survey on cycle theft.\u00a0 Most people who have their bikes stolen have an income of less than &hellip; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theoillamp.co.uk\/?p=8405\">Continue reading <span class=\"meta-nav\">&rarr;<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_exactmetrics_skip_tracking":false,"_exactmetrics_sitenote_active":false,"_exactmetrics_sitenote_note":"","_exactmetrics_sitenote_category":0,"footnotes":""},"categories":[27],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-8405","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-cycling"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v25.8 -
